Peritoneal Dialysis

Peritoneal Dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis, or PD, is another common treatment for kidney disease. Much like hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis filters excess liquids when your kidneys no longer function normally.

Commonly, a catheter is inserted directly into the abdomen to help discharge the dialysis solution into your bloodstream. In this treatment, your stomach acts as a filter to diffuse the solution throughout your body.

PD could be used as an alternative to hemodialysis because it can be administered almost anywhere and does not require a large hemodialysis machine. Though it can be more convenient, is it also more painful due to the catheter port in the abdomen. Talk to your doctor about which option is right for you.
